We’ve been Galavanting here on these Native lands since October 1587 when Filipinos stepped off a Spanish galleon and upon the shores of Morro Bay, CA.

I know our parents did not want us Galavanting on the streets but we think our kids Galavanting and exploring (with us safely nearby) is a good thing. And actually my parents did let me (in elementary school) leave the house on my own, on my bike, not exactly sure where I was going and just expect me back when the sun went down. No cellphones, no pagers, no change to even use for a pay phone. So I guess maybe there’s a version of Galavanting we were allowed to do. It’s the Galavanting into our High School and College years that seem to be issue right? And for some of us even into our adult years. I can still feel my mom still wanting to ask “where are you?” and “who’s there?” if she knows I'm out with friends.

My thoughts are that Galavanting is deeply rooted within us from our ancestors who first galavanted their way to our archipelago. To the generations after them galavanting the water ways within and between islands. To our diaspora galavanting across bodies of water to create better futures for their families. It’s what we do. So we would like to encourage all our fellow parents to engage and celebrate our children’s deep rooted Galavanting spirit.
